Grant Wilson is a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering with research interests in multi-vector,multi-scale data analytics, and a particular focus on the comparison of energy vectors over similar time frames. In 2017 and 2018 he was a Co-Investigator onthe UK Energy Research Centre’s FlexiNET project, which aims to deliver new understanding and insights on the levels of seasonal and diurnal flexibility that low-carbon heating might need in Great Britain.
A recent UKERC briefing note compared the levels of local gas demand and national electrica supply over the 2017/2018 heating season http://www.ukerc.ac.uk/publications/local-gas-demand-vs-electricity-supply.html.
The decarbonisation of heat is a significant challenge for Great Britain given its current use of natural gas to provide the majority of its heat demand. This multidisciplinary problem requires greater research and innovation on the ability to shift the timing of heat demand as well as reduce average and peak demand, and will be helped by greater levels of sector cross coupling and collaboration.
